Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!

It was so wonderful to be back in class with the students! I cannot believe we had been seperated since March!  The year is off to a wonderful start and the kids are adapting nicely to all of the changes that have taken place due to the social distancing requirements. The students are wearing their masks all day and I think they enjoy having their own space with the partitions in place! The kids are very mindful about the 6 ft. social distancing rules and have even created games at recess that allow them to keep six feet apart!

We have been very busy getting to know one another and adapting to spending time with our friends that are learning from home!  The distance learning students are with us all day: from morning prayer to dismissal.  It is nice that they are still able to see and interact with their friends that are in school.  We cannot wait for the day in which we will all be together once again!

I am very excited to learn and grow with my new students both socially and academically!  The kids are taking on all of their subjects with vigor and are eager to take it all in!

Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year!

The 2019-2020 School Year is off to a great start!  I have enjoyed getting to know my new students over the past 5 weeks - they are quite an interesting bunch!  We have kickstarted our science curriculum by learning about matter and its properties.  We are now moving into heat transfer.  In mathematics we are in the midst of adding and subtraction numbers in the billions!  I am amazed at how mathematical my new students are!! Last Friday we had out annual Jog-A-Thon fundraiser.  The kids ran 40+ laps and got to do a few funky dances!  It was a blast!  Next week you will find us at the Imagination Station in Toledo!  There is never a dull moment in the 4th Grade at Saint Pius!

Halloween

Our Halloween Party was a huge success!  After we passed out candy to our friends we played Minute to Win It party games!  We also played Halloween Bingo and had delicious apples, caramel, donuts, cookies, and cider!  The weather cooperated and we were able to parade around the school, with the other classes, showing off our wonderful Halloween costumes! Thank you to all that volunteered and made our Halloween extravaganza a success!!

See What's Happening in Science Lab!!!

The Fourth Grade Students have had quite an exciting time in the Science Lab this year!  Mrs. Tucker has provided the students with many wonderful hands-on opportunities to explore the various units of study we have been doing.

We started the year with Matter and Energy.  The students were explored the different properties of matter such as mass, density, and volume.  They also explored the world of energy by creating electric circuits and magnet investigations.

We then moved onto our unit on The Solar System.  Students created models of the Solar System and Moon Phases.

We are now exploring Plant and Animals.  The students are learning about adaptations that allow plants and animals to survive in their environment.  We also have some butterfly larvae in our room that we will watch carefully as they transform into Painted Lady Butterflies over the next few weeks.

1st Quarter

I cannot believe that we are wrapping up the 1st Quarter this week!  We have already accomplished so much since the beginning of school on August 24.  We spent the first week getting to know each other!  I have quite a talented bunch this year!  Football, Soccer, Sewing, Volleyball, and Track are just a few of the after school activities that the 4th graders are involved in!  In September, we had a visit from the Windy City Players that performed the "real" story of Sleeping Beauty!  We also participated in our first Student Council elections and Tyler R. was the victor!  All of the kids did a great job with posters and speeches; it was a very close race!  Austin, Chrystian, and Gabby participated in the All School Spelling Bee.  Chrystian is moving on to the K of C Bee in November! All of the spellers did  w-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l!!  October 7 we had the annual Jog-A-Thon!  This is a very important fundraiser for our school!  Thank you to all of your friends and family for their generosity!!  We also had our first field trip in October.  We went to the Imagination Station (take a look at the video below this post).  The kids spent the day exploring different areas of science.  They all behaved very well and came back with many stories and information to share with the class!  We will round out the month with our Halloween Party!  Stay tuned for pics.....we are off to a great start!!!

Catholic Schools Week

3rd Quarter Happenings

Many exciting things have been happening at St. Pius School this quarter and the best is yet to come!  Our 3rd Quarter started off with the students learning to multiply larger numbers!  I think they amazed themselves at how quickly they caught on to this difficult concept!  We are now learning long division and, once again, the kids are tackling the challenge and doing a fantastic job!

We just ended an exciting Catholic Schools Week at St. Pius.  On Monday, the kids had pajama day and a read-in.  Building blanket forts in the classroom is always a ton of fun!  On Tuesday, we had Spirit Day and the kick-ball and volleyball competitions between the classes.  Room 4-11 beat us by one run!!  It was a very exciting game and the kids really exhibited great sportsmanship!  Wednesday was CRAZY day!  The kids had funky hair and clothes (so did Mrs. P!).  Thursday we celebrated Mass and our wonderful Priest, Deacon, Mr. Jerry, and Mrs. Seward.  In the evening we had a Book Bingo and yours truly was the MC (don't give me a microphone!!).  We wrapped up Catholic Schools Week with Camp Day!  The kids dressed in camp gear and we played camp games and had a sing-a-long with the entire school!  It was a fabulous way to wrap up a great week that celebrated Catholic Schools!!

Lent is beginning this Wednesday and we look forward to Stations of the Cross every Friday at 2:15. This is a wonderful way to walk with Jesus and remember the Passion of Jesus as a faith community.

There are a lot of exciting things still to come in the 3rd and 4th quarters...stay tuned!

Is it the fourth quarter already???

I cannot believe that we are already entering the 4th quarter of the school year!  So many exciting things have been happening in the Fourth Grade classroom that time has just flown by!  Speaking of flying by....our Painted-Lady Butterfly larvae have arrived!  The larvae have begun forming their chrysalises and should emerge just in time for Easter!  What a wonderful way to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus!  We also have lady bug larvae this year.  We are so excited to see the metamorphosis of both of these insects!  In this last quarter we will be venturing to the MJR Theater to view the Disney Earth Day movie, Bears.  This will be a wonderful outing for the children!  We will also be having a Tiger Day in which we play baseball, eat hot dogs, and have cotton candy!!

Happy New Year!

I hope you are all trying to stay warm on this blustery January day!  As we ring in the new year, please take a few moments to thank God for all of the wonderful blessings He has bestowed upon each one of us.  I am especially thankful today, for the warm surroundings that I have.  I am also thankful that I am able to teach at a school that does such wonderful service projects such as the coat drive and the canned food drive that we did this Advent season and am reflecting on the importance of these two projects, especially in these sub-zero temperatures.

There is so much to look forward to this second half of the year!  We will be working diligently on division, fractions, and geometry in math.  In science we will be learning about our Solar System, plant and animal adaptations, and food chains.  In Religion we will be learning about the Beatitudes, the Seven Sacraments, and taking a closer look at the seasons of Lent and Easter.  We also have Catholic Schools week, our winter field trip, Cinco de Mayo, and many other fun activities!

I wish all of you a very healthy and Happy New Year!
