Third Quarter!

A big congratulations goes out to Ivan and Erik. They were both participants in our school National Geographic Geography Bee.

I cannot believe that it is already the start of the third quarter. This quarter I plan on taking the kids to the Ann Arbor Museum of Natural History. They have a planetarium there and it will fit in nicely when we learn about the solar system. We just began reading There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom by Louis Sachar (author of Holes). This novel is about a fifth grade boy and his struggles with friendship. I think the kids will take away a lesson or two about friendship as we study character, setting, and plot. The kids are also required to do all of their work in cursive from this point forward. I got a lot of ugh's when I said this but we will push through it!!

Thank you to all who have sent in items for our "Adopt a Marine" service project. Receiving the little treats in the mail is a brightspot to an otherwise grim day for Zach! We will continue this project until the end of the year.

Spelling Bee

Today we had the school spelling bee! I am so proud of the 4th Grade students that particpated: Angela, Ismael, Anela, and Delphia. You all should be very proud of yourselves for working very hard and doing such an excellent job! Angela and Anela will be moving on to the Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee on Thursday night. Hope to see you there!!

Oobleck!!!

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

We ended our first science chapter on matter with an ooey, gooey, science lab. We tried to figure out if Oobleck was a liquid or a solid. I think the class was split about 50/50. The kids had a lot of fun and I had a lot of fun watching them investigate the strange substance! Many students wanted to make Oobleck at home. The recipe is about 2 cups of cornstarch to 1 cup of water. Add food coloring if you would like. We added green so our Oobleck looked just like the Oobleck in the Dr. Seuss book, Bartholomew and the Oobleck. You may have to play with the consistency. You want to hard when you hit it but liquidy when you slowly put your finger in it. Have fun!!!
