Exciting Week!
Well, we have finished our first week of IOWA testing. The kids have worked so hard that I am glad we also found time to have some fun! Thursday, we were visited by three 10-day old chickens. Mr. Suchy was kind enough to share his chickens with us and teach us about the chickens and how to care for them. Friday was the annual Jog-A-Thon. God provided us with the perfect weather, overcast, cool and dry!! I was amazed at the endurance of my fourth graders as they ran over 40 laps around the playground! Thank you to all of the parent volunteers, Mrs. Wallace, Mrs. Blanton, Mr. Eory, the PTO and our wonderful D.J.!!

Off to a Great Start!!
The 2012 school year has gotten off to a great start! The fourth graders are getting into the swing of things. They are doing a great job switching between three classrooms everyday! Very impressive!! We are currently learning about matter and had fun trying to melt an ice cube with only our bodies. The kids did a great job in the science lab!! They are reading Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing with Mrs. Ballantyne and are making a commercial! We have started going to specials and are enjoying the little breaks each day.
Keep up the great work, fourth grade!!

Reading Month
During the month of March we did many exciting things to celebrate Reading Month. Several times we had an all-school D.E.A.R. time. It didn't matter where you were or what you were doing, when D.E.A.R. time was announced over the PA we did just that - we dropped everything and read! We also had a pajama day and read in. The kids love wearing their p.j.'s to school and laying on the floor with their friends to read! Last week, was our guest reader week; everyday a different parent came in to share their favorite book with the class. We heard B is for Baseball, SkippyJon Jones, a biography about Beethoven, Diary of a Spider, and St. George and the Dragon. Reading Month ended with an all-school field trip to see The Lorax. The children had a wonderful time and it truly was an heart-warming experience to have the whole school together in one room, clapping and singing and enjoying eachother as a community!

Third Quarter!
A big congratulations goes out to Ivan and Erik. They were both participants in our school National Geographic Geography Bee.
I cannot believe that it is already the start of the third quarter. This quarter I plan on taking the kids to the Ann Arbor Museum of Natural History. They have a planetarium there and it will fit in nicely when we learn about the solar system. We just began reading There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom by Louis Sachar (author of Holes). This novel is about a fifth grade boy and his struggles with friendship. I think the kids will take away a lesson or two about friendship as we study character, setting, and plot. The kids are also required to do all of their work in cursive from this point forward. I got a lot of ugh's when I said this but we will push through it!!
Thank you to all who have sent in items for our "Adopt a Marine" service project. Receiving the little treats in the mail is a brightspot to an otherwise grim day for Zach! We will continue this project until the end of the year.
